Kinky Boots was inspired by the true story of a traditional English men’s footwear factory in Northamptonshire which turned to the production of kinky boots for drag queen’s and transvestites in order to save the ailing family business and safeguard the jobs of the local community. Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Lola – the Drag Queen muse to factory owner Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) – is captivating and beautiful to look at on the screen. Melding precisely the right amounts of humour and emotion to create a vibrant, empathic character, Ejiofor holds the movie on his own, standing out significantly from his rather flat costars. The film itself is well directed, with great depictions of small-town English life, and consistently appealing camera frames – it even manages to make successive factory scenes look interesting. This is a fairly simple movie; the story was none to complicated and fairly predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. The biggest complaint my companions and I had was that there weren’t enough shoes, which was hugely disappointing. We all expected more actual shoes from a movie about kinky boots: shoe fetishists be forewarned.
