I hate American Pie and Don McLean was a pompous fuck for writing it. Attributing the death of rock & roll to the death of one or more of its stars is far too simple an equation; it suggests that one’s understanding of rock & roll’s importance is anchored firmly to an individual…which is an ontological error in the extreme. Furthermore, Altamont was hardly the evil, ‘satanic’, armageddon that McLean so dramatically suggested. Also, the song sucks ass aesthetically, and the next time I hear it I’m going to throw my fist through the speaker, grab hold of McLean’s intestines, rip them from the stereo, and crack them over my thigh. Twice.
